Trombone 101 Exclusive Written Interview

I had the pleasure of doing an exclusive written interview with Trombone 101! This has definitely been one of my most detailed interviews to date. Just a Girl

Just a Girl by No Doubt is one of my favorite songs from the 90s. It reminds me of the good ol’ days watching music videos on MTV. Now, we have YouTube, haha! To this day, Tragic Kingdom is still one of my favorite albums! I actually listened to it a lot this past summer when I was floating around in the pool or out for a jog. It’s just right for all of those summertime vibes.

Just a Girl is an anthem for girls everywhere, so I knew it was the perfect choice for an "all me" trombone quartet. It’s a great girl power song! I wanted to include the lyrics down below, so just incase you haven't heard this song before, you can see why I picked it. I just love these lyrics by Gwen Stefani.

On another note, This video is my green screen debut! I had a blast picking out all of these super girly pink backgrounds to go with the song. I actually don't really like pink, but I wanted to play up the theme. I am excited to improve my green screen skills in the future and see all that it can do!

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t planning on recording reference videos for the TMEA Trombone Etudes this year. I just have so many other projects I am working on right now and that I am excited to dedicate my time to. BUT, I received several requests from my YouTube subscribers to record the TMEA All-State Band audition etudes again this year. So I did it for you!!! It is very important to me as a content creator that I make the content you want to see! If I keep seeing the same request from multiple people, I will make that video for you! I wouldn’t be where I am without all of your support and I want to show you that. Thank you so much to my subscribers and students for your input and video requests!

This video can be used as a reference for Texas high school trombone students who are auditioning for the 2020-2021 All-State Band. Included in this video is a performance of the etude w/ sheet music, followed by playing tips, audition tips and a warm up exercise. Hint: the warm up exercise is of a pattern that appears 3 times within this etude! If you get super comfortable with this pattern, it will definitely help you in playing this etude #2 (Voxman Pg. 4). Also, if you take the pattern up on half step at a time, it is a great way to build your range! Check it out on a recent Instagram post I made!

Toto - Africa // 6 Trombone Cover Version // Featuring Jeff Harrigan

I MISS THE RAINS DOWN IN AFRICA!!!

Last week’s video was a fun one for sure! Africa by Toto is one of my favorite songs, as I am sure it is many of yours. This classic song makes just about everybody bop their head to the music (or just straight-up get up and dance)! It was impossible not to move around while playing this song. That’s why we decided we wanted to make this video a fun one.

This trombone arrangement of Africa was written for 6 trombone parts. 5 tenor trombones and 1 bass trombone. I made the drum beat in GarageBand. This was my first time making a beat like this in GarageBand and I am super happy with how it turned out! I will definitely be using the drums in GarageBand for future projects. It just adds so much more life to the song! I hope you all like it too.

I have definitely been trying to “up the ante” with my videos. It is always my goal to make each video better than the one before it. This is definitely the most shots I have ever taken for a video (wait… scratch that, my 12 Days of Quarantine video had the most shots)! There were still a lot for this one though! This arrangement of Africa was for 6 trombone parts - so we each took a video for each part both inside and outside and then added in all the extra clips. Hopefully you all got a laugh out of them, haha! I was definitely cracking up when I was editing the video. That is one of my favorite parts about collaborating with other people online. When they send you their videos, you never know what kind of funny stuff you will find in there! Haha, always good for a laugh.

This is my third quarantine collaboration with Jeff Harrigan. What are us trombone players to do while we’re stuck at home?! The answer is easy: make music videos!!!

Jeff and I have played together in the shows Blast, Blast the Music of Disney and One Piece Oto Utage in Japan. Outside of his Japan tours, Jeff has been working for years as a freelancer in the Washington D.C./Baltimore area, on cruise ships, and all over the US with musical theatre productions. He will be moving to Texas soon, so Texas people: HIT. HIM. UP!

HOW TO PLAY HIGH ON TROMBONE with Over the Rainbow // Lesson and Play-Along

I am very excited to talk (and type) about this week’s video, How to Play High on Trombone with Over the Rainbow. After hearing all of your responses and feedback on this video, I have decided to turn it into an educational video series on my YouTube channel! The series will be called “Play High”. Play High with Over the Rainbow, Play High with _________ , etc.! I am excited to share my favorite melodies with you in this way.

I have been wanting to create more educational content on my YouTube channel for a while now. Of course, in addition to the music video-style arrangements and collaborations! I very much consider those the bread-and-butter or main content of my YouTube channel. However, I have realized (from all of your questions and feedback) that a lot of my followers and subscribers don’t JUST want to be entertained, they also want to become better trombone players, better brass players, and better musicians!

The videos will be in a similar format. We will take a melody up, one half step at a time with the goal of increasing your range on the trombone (or any instrument) and being able to play higher and higher. It is a gradual process and I’d be happy if we could do it together! The videos in the Play High series will also include a custom made practice track and sheet music. After each video is released, ALL of the practice tracks and (some) of the sheet music will be available on my website for purchase.

This is a process I am very passionate about and I use daily in my own practice. Like I said in the video, one of the most common questions I get asked is ,”How do you play high on the trombone”. The answers is simple: one half step at a time. I look forward to creating more videos in this format and sharing them with the trombone and brass communities. #teamtrombone

Trombone Institute of Technology (or TIT) is a favorite among the trombone community. It has been performed many, many times, both live and online. We knew if we were going to record this piece, we just had to put a special quarantine spin on it! We wanted to share what life as a musician has been like the past few months. This idea was inspired by Aubrey Logan, who made a hilarious quarantine video for her song, Tom Bradley International Terminal. Check out Aubrey’s video below:

12 Days of Quarantine // 12 Days of Christmas Parody // Trombone Quartet Arrangement with Vocals

What have you been doing during quarantine?! Here's what I have been up to with my two cousins, Meghan and Madi. Take a look into our daily quarantine life in Florida! Including palm trees, lots of swimming, golf carts and more! 

12 Days of Quarantine is hands down, the most involved video I have ever made. As most of you know, I am stuck away from home and quarantining in Florida. I came to Florida in March to work for Carnival Cruise Lines, playing in one of their rock bands. I know, I know…horrible timing! Anyway, I will spare you all of the details, the bottom line is I cannot return home to Japan. I am very fortunate I have family that I can stay with during this time, I am super grateful. 

With all of this free time and my cousins Madi and Meghan home from school, their mom (my cousin Dana) asked me to teach the girls some music and maybe make a video with them. Of course, I said, “YES”! When we came up with the idea to make this video, I never would have imagined it would grow into what it became. But hey, go big or go home, and I can’t go home so…. haha!

We started by watching other YouTube videos and coming up with ideas for the kind of video we wanted to make or maybe what song we wanted to do. Of course, we knew we wanted it to be about quarantine life, as this is what is on the forefront of everyone’s mind these days. This is the life we are living. We decided on 12 Days of Christmas as our song, then brainstormed all the ideas based off of the activities in the girls’ everyday quarantine lives. They did most of the work coming up with all of the words and I just guided the process. 

To be honest, when we started this little project, I had no intention of putting it on my YouTube channel or posting it on my social media accounts. I have a trombone channel, I play trombone, I figured no one would want to see me and my cousins singing a Christmas song!

We originally recorded the singing to 12 Days of Quarantine with a backing track. I had found some online but I didn’t really like any of them. Then, I had the idea to make the “backing track” a trombone quartet! Everything escalated from there… as I found a way to included trombones in this project, I knew it would be good material for my YouTube channel. 

So of course, I went through my normal process. Arrange a trombone piece, record all the parts, mix them together, film videos of me playing trombone…

For all the other videos of the girls, we filmed over a few days time. We had a blast coming up with all the different shots we wanted to get. We all agreed it would look really cool to have a “scene” for each of the 12 days. My favorite was “5 golf cart rides” where I played trombone sitting in the back of the golf cart as Meghan and Madi sang! While we were filming, I already knew this was going to be a lot of work to edit!!! But I think it was well worth it, I am really happy with how they video turned out. 

I also say this was the most involved video I have ever done because In 12 Days of Quarantine I did so many things for the first time. This was my first time including vocals in a piece. So that meant it was also my first time recording and mixing vocals. As to be expected, the trombone parts were way too loud during the beginning stages of mixing! As a trombone player, you best believe that’s what I wanted to hear! Don’t worry, I eventually caved and bumped up the vocals for the final product.

This was also the first time I included so many split screens in one shot! On the last time through the form I displayed the same number of shots as the number of days, 12, 11, 10, etc. This section definitely took the most time to edit! Editing this video was great practice for my Final Cut X skills. I definitely learned some new tricks along the way. 

The final element to this super complicated project was being sponsored by Thoroughbred Golf Carts. They are a custom golf cart business in Englewood, FL. They also have great deals on rentals and do repairs as well! Thoroughbred Golf Carts made the golf cart that we drove around (and played trombone in) in the video. Thank you, for letting us drive your golf cart around and do crazy things!

TEQUILA: Trombone Multitrack Cover

I hope everyone had a great Cinco de Mayo yesterday! I celebrated by editing a YouTube video all day, then a boat ride with my family in the evening. Unfortunately, I did not drink any Tequila, haha. I do miss Cinco de Mayo gigs, and playing down in Mexico. I was definitely thinking about that yesterday and when I made this video. I am looking forward to traveling and playing live shows again someday!

I know we are all stuck at home right now, but I hope this video brought you a little joy! I arranged this short version of Tequila for trombone quartet (and claps). Tequila has always been one of my favorite songs to play live. It is so catchy and always a crowd pleaser. Usually everyone gets up and starts dancing when this song comes on.

I tried to convey the fun, party vibe of Tequila by playing it in the pool! I am always into trying new things for my music videos. If you haven't yet - try playing your instrument in the pool, haha! It will give you something to do today! BTW - playing on the raft was harder than in looked. It kept floating away while I was trying to play!

IMAGINE By JOHN LENNON // Pentatonix Version // Trombone Multitrack Cover

With everything that is going on in the world right now, the John Lennon classic, Imagine, is all over the internet... again! This song is as timeless as it as beautiful. Before I decided to make a trombone arrangement of this song, I listened to it over and over again (as I usually do). The lyrics really stuck with me and made me do a lot of thinking. Again, very appropriate to the times. I envisioned the lyrics every time I played the song. If you are not familiar with the lyrics, I included them below. Even if you are, give them another read through! John Lennon was such an amazing lyricist.

In 2017, Pentatonix released their own version of Imagine, and it was of course, AMAZING! Our trombone multitrack cover version of Imagine is a transcription of the Pentatonix arrangement. 5 vocal parts = 5 trombone parts. Pentatonix's arrangements translate really well to trombone. It gets a little high at times - but challenge accepted! Another thing I like about Pentatonix’s arrangements is that they feature all 5 vocalists. We included a trombone solo on each one of the 5 parts. Something you don’t see too often in trombone arrangements. Usually only the lead voice is featured, and maybe one more. If you haven’t seen the Pentatonix version, check it out below - it will give you goosebumps! Even though we didn’t have words in ours, I hope we were able to capture some of the magic of this version.

ASK LISA - My First Q&A! How to memorize music quickly, How to transcribe, How to be a pro musician

This was my very first Q&A video! I am calling this series "Ask Lisa" and you can ask me anything! Some of my favorite questions this week were about how to memorize a lot of music quickly, how to transcribe music for your own arrangements and how to be a professional musician. I also answered questions about my trombones and mouthpieces, my time in Blast, the pros and cons of creating consistent content and much more!

This was a prerecorded video, as you can tell. That is just the format I am used to from creating videos for my YouTube channel. I have been polling everyone on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram and overwhelmingly, people said they prefer Live Stream Q&A’s! The people have spoken! So, for my next Q&A I am going to do a Live Stream, and then upload the video to YouTube later so you can watch if you were unable to join us live.

So now, I have to figure out the best way to do that! You all are gonna make me work for it, haha. I also did a poll about which platform people would like to watch the Live Stream on, and again, there was an overwhelming answer - INSTAGRAM! So that is the platform I will choose for my next Q&A Live Stream. Sorry, Facebook people! The next step is: I will research how to do multiple platforms at once and see if I can include Facebook Live too. One step at a time… maybe for my 3rd Q&A video!

Billie Eilish - everything i wanted: Trombone Cover

Check out this trombone cover of Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish! I have been wanting to do a Billie Eilish cover for a while and here it is! I am OBSESSED with the song Bad Guy, it is so fun to play live! But, so many trombonists have already made videos for Bad Guy so I decided to do Everything I Wanted instead. This tune has such a great melody and I knew it would sound awesome on trombone.

During my time in my hometown of Phoenix, AZ I was able to spend a lot of time reconnecting and making music with so many good friends. I am so happy Jeff Hattasch and Seth Gory agreed to collab with me on this project. Jeff and Seth are two of my best friends from college. We all met freshman year at ASU (Arizona State University) in the trombone studio. Man, have we had some fun times!!! As you can see from the bloopers at the end, we were literally cracking up the whole time! Making a video like this reminds me of why I love music so much. There is NOTHING better than making music with your friends!

We were originally going to film at the beautiful Tempe Beach Park, a place very near and dear to our hearts. Funny enough it was raining that day and decided not to film at the park. It never rains in Arizona!!! So we moved the shoot over to Jeff’s house. The rain eventually cleared up and we were able to get some shots outside! The “rustic cabin” out back made for an unexpectedly great backdrop!

This trombone cover version of Everything I Wanted was written as a trombone duet to feature two different players on the melody (Verse 1 and Verse 2). A couple times in the tune we split into a 4 part harmony for some extra oompf, then at the end, 8 part harmony to go out with a bang! Seth made and mixed the track for this video and I think he did a great job! Having a full track to play along with really makes a difference. This is the first time I have included a custom made track on this channel, it's something I definitely want to do more of in the future. Also, I was so happy to have Jeff share his sweet trombone skills!

REFLECTION FROM DISNEY'S MULAN: Trombone and Marimba Duet Feat. Kaylie Brooke

If you are a Disney or Mulan fan, then you know that March 27, 2020 was the planned U.S. release date for the new Mulan movie. With everything that is going on in the world, that is sadly no longer happening. Kaylie and I have been planning to release this video on March 27th for a while, and after talking about it, we decided to release it anyway! For those of you who were excited about the Mulan movie coming out, hopefully our rendition of Reflection will hold you over until the actual movie release happens. Please enjoy and share with all of your Disney and Mulan loving friends!

Kaylie and I co-arranged this piece, which is something I have never done before. I arranged the trombone part and Kaylie arranged the marimba part. We did this remotely as I was in Arizona during this time and Kaylie was in Texas. We communicated by iMessage and email and would send each other “pieces” of the project to get feedback from each other. We worked together to create what you are hearing in this video! This was a really fun way to work, and I think it is pretty amazing that you can still make music with someone even though they are in a different part of the country, or even the world!

This was a special song for the both of us to work on because it was also played in an amazing scene in the Blast The Music of Disney show that we have both been a part of since 2016. In the Blast show, Reflection was realized as a flute and fluglehorn duet. The music was captured into motion by the amazing baton soloist Chiho Honjo. It has always been one of my favorite scenes from that show. Kaylie and I were very happy to arrange reflection for trombone and marimba so we could perform very our own version.
