Freelance Music Careers & Building Opportunities in a Digital Landscape @ Indiana University

On March 5, 2021 I had the pleasure of having a Zoom chat with Dr. Jason Nam and the music students at Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music. We talked about life in music school and how to get the most out of it, how to create a career as a freelance musician, how to network, how to build your private lessons studio, working in a foreign country, social media, how to build your online presence and more!

Huge thank you to Dr. Nam and his students for all of their thoughtful questions. I hope this video is helpful to college music majors or anyone pursuing a career as a freelance musician!

If you have any questions about anything we talked about in the video, please feel free to reach out on social media or send me an email, lisaliztrombone@gmail.com.

Festival Trombón GT

I was honored to participate in Festival Trombón GT, Guatemala’s international trombone festival. As almost all musical events this year, it was done virtually. The virtual format worked out very well, although I am very excited to travel to Guatemala in person next year for the event! Of course, travel restrictions pending… fingers crossed.

I taught a group class on Zoom where we went over trombone fundamentals and warm up techniques. At the end of the class there was a Q&A session where the participants were able to ask questions that they had. I was happy to have my friend, Dr. Jose Leonardo Leon translate to Spanish for me. I hope to upload the whole video of the class to my YouTube channel in the future. I think this will be a great resource for my Spanish speaking trombone friends! I am looking forward to sharing the class with you all.

If you would like more information about Festival Trómbon GT check out their links below! I will also share the event flyers down below.

Fantasy by Earth, Wind & Fire Featuring Reggie Pace

Hello everyone! You may have noticed I’ve been a little absent here on my blog. The reason is… I just moved to a new city! I now live in Bremerton, Washington, just outside Seattle. I am super excited to explore this area of the country and meet and play with the local musicians!

I am so pleased to share this next video, this is one of the most fun projects I’ve worked on in a while! We recorded Fantasy by Earth, Wind & Fire. Shawn W. Davern made an incredible arrangement of this tune. The instrumentation includes 2 solo trombone parts, a trombone choir of 8 trombones (or in our case, 7 trombones and a tuba), piano, bass and drums. To learn more about Shawn and hear his arrangements and original music please visit his website below.

You may have noticed there is a VERY special guest in this video! Reggie Pace from No BS! Brass Band. We were so excited to have Reggie play the solo part on this tune, he SLAYED it! Check out his last note at the end, you’ll love it! The first time I heard it, I was so excited I almost threw my computer, haha. To keep up to date on Reggie’s projects you can follow him on Instagram @reggiepace and Twitter @ReggiePace . While you’re at it check out the No BS! Brass Band website and listen to some awesome, high energy brass music!

Rounding out this talented ensemble of musicians is Kai Smith on tuba, Kaylie Brooke on drums and Abe Song playing both the piano and bass parts on keyboard. I know both Kaylie and Kai from touring with the show Blast The Music of Disney. It’s always fun to work with fellow Blasters on these virtual collab projects!

Please enjoy our trombone version of Fantasy!
