TEQUILA: Trombone Multitrack Cover

I hope everyone had a great Cinco de Mayo yesterday! I celebrated by editing a YouTube video all day, then a boat ride with my family in the evening. Unfortunately, I did not drink any Tequila, haha. I do miss Cinco de Mayo gigs, and playing down in Mexico. I was definitely thinking about that yesterday and when I made this video. I am looking forward to traveling and playing live shows again someday!

I know we are all stuck at home right now, but I hope this video brought you a little joy! I arranged this short version of Tequila for trombone quartet (and claps). Tequila has always been one of my favorite songs to play live. It is so catchy and always a crowd pleaser. Usually everyone gets up and starts dancing when this song comes on.

I tried to convey the fun, party vibe of Tequila by playing it in the pool! I am always into trying new things for my music videos. If you haven't yet - try playing your instrument in the pool, haha! It will give you something to do today! BTW - playing on the raft was harder than in looked. It kept floating away while I was trying to play!

IMAGINE By JOHN LENNON // Pentatonix Version // Trombone Multitrack Cover

With everything that is going on in the world right now, the John Lennon classic, Imagine, is all over the internet... again! This song is as timeless as it as beautiful. Before I decided to make a trombone arrangement of this song, I listened to it over and over again (as I usually do). The lyrics really stuck with me and made me do a lot of thinking. Again, very appropriate to the times. I envisioned the lyrics every time I played the song. If you are not familiar with the lyrics, I included them below. Even if you are, give them another read through! John Lennon was such an amazing lyricist.

In 2017, Pentatonix released their own version of Imagine, and it was of course, AMAZING! Our trombone multitrack cover version of Imagine is a transcription of the Pentatonix arrangement. 5 vocal parts = 5 trombone parts. Pentatonix's arrangements translate really well to trombone. It gets a little high at times - but challenge accepted! Another thing I like about Pentatonix’s arrangements is that they feature all 5 vocalists. We included a trombone solo on each one of the 5 parts. Something you don’t see too often in trombone arrangements. Usually only the lead voice is featured, and maybe one more. If you haven’t seen the Pentatonix version, check it out below - it will give you goosebumps! Even though we didn’t have words in ours, I hope we were able to capture some of the magic of this version.

ASK LISA - My First Q&A! How to memorize music quickly, How to transcribe, How to be a pro musician

This was my very first Q&A video! I am calling this series "Ask Lisa" and you can ask me anything! Some of my favorite questions this week were about how to memorize a lot of music quickly, how to transcribe music for your own arrangements and how to be a professional musician. I also answered questions about my trombones and mouthpieces, my time in Blast, the pros and cons of creating consistent content and much more!

This was a prerecorded video, as you can tell. That is just the format I am used to from creating videos for my YouTube channel. I have been polling everyone on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram and overwhelmingly, people said they prefer Live Stream Q&A’s! The people have spoken! So, for my next Q&A I am going to do a Live Stream, and then upload the video to YouTube later so you can watch if you were unable to join us live.

So now, I have to figure out the best way to do that! You all are gonna make me work for it, haha. I also did a poll about which platform people would like to watch the Live Stream on, and again, there was an overwhelming answer - INSTAGRAM! So that is the platform I will choose for my next Q&A Live Stream. Sorry, Facebook people! The next step is: I will research how to do multiple platforms at once and see if I can include Facebook Live too. One step at a time… maybe for my 3rd Q&A video!

Billie Eilish - everything i wanted: Trombone Cover

Check out this trombone cover of Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish! I have been wanting to do a Billie Eilish cover for a while and here it is! I am OBSESSED with the song Bad Guy, it is so fun to play live! But, so many trombonists have already made videos for Bad Guy so I decided to do Everything I Wanted instead. This tune has such a great melody and I knew it would sound awesome on trombone.

During my time in my hometown of Phoenix, AZ I was able to spend a lot of time reconnecting and making music with so many good friends. I am so happy Jeff Hattasch and Seth Gory agreed to collab with me on this project. Jeff and Seth are two of my best friends from college. We all met freshman year at ASU (Arizona State University) in the trombone studio. Man, have we had some fun times!!! As you can see from the bloopers at the end, we were literally cracking up the whole time! Making a video like this reminds me of why I love music so much. There is NOTHING better than making music with your friends!

We were originally going to film at the beautiful Tempe Beach Park, a place very near and dear to our hearts. Funny enough it was raining that day and decided not to film at the park. It never rains in Arizona!!! So we moved the shoot over to Jeff’s house. The rain eventually cleared up and we were able to get some shots outside! The “rustic cabin” out back made for an unexpectedly great backdrop!

This trombone cover version of Everything I Wanted was written as a trombone duet to feature two different players on the melody (Verse 1 and Verse 2). A couple times in the tune we split into a 4 part harmony for some extra oompf, then at the end, 8 part harmony to go out with a bang! Seth made and mixed the track for this video and I think he did a great job! Having a full track to play along with really makes a difference. This is the first time I have included a custom made track on this channel, it's something I definitely want to do more of in the future. Also, I was so happy to have Jeff share his sweet trombone skills!

SUMMERTIME - SUBLIME COVER - TROMBONE CAM: With The Hourglass Cats at W Scottsdale on 3/14/2020

As some of you may know, during February and March I visited my hometown of Phoenix, AZ. During my time in Arizona, I filmed many of my gigs with a special Trombone Cam view! I am looking forward to going through all of this footage and sharing these video on my YouTube channel. I was thinking of making one long compilation video from all my AZ gigs. But, as I was going through, I realized there was just way too much footage! Summertime is the first video like this I have uploaded to YouTube. I am not going to upload every single song, but maybe a few, or maybe a compilation per gig or per band? This cover version of Summertime by Sublime was performed with The Hourglass Cats. The Hourglass Cats are an original rock/reggae band that also play cover sets throughout the Phoenix area. Of course, this one is always a crowd pleaser! Summertime is one of Sublime's most famous songs, and who doesn't love that unmistakable melodic quote written by George Gershwin for Porgy and Bess. The Hourglass Cats cover many Sublime songs - but this one is my favorite one to play! This video was filmed at the W Hotel in Scottsdale on March 14, 2020. I have played there many times, and I love the vibe. Especially those lights!

Also, when I was in AZ, I went into the studio to record on The Hourglass Cats’ new album! I am super excited for that to come out and of course I will share it here when it does!

TALA BY SARAH GERONIMO - TROMBONE COVER & Special Message to Color Guard Alliance Philippines (CGAP)

About a week ago I was contacted by Patricia Real Barairo about making a special video. Patricia is a board director at Drum Corps Asia, Event Director at WGI Philippines and the Founder & Executive Director at Color Guard Alliance of the Philippines Incorporated (CGAP). I met Patricia and her group, CGAP, last December when I was a judge at the Thailand World Music Championships. Due to everything going on in the world, the kids at CGAP, like most of us, are stuck at home! All of their events, performances and competitions have been cancelled. Of course, the kids are sad. I made this video for them in hopes of brightening their spirits and letting them know that they are not alone.

I know a lot of children are sad about marching band, color guard and drum corps being cancelled. I feel bad, but I have to say to them, “Welcome to being a professional musician or dancer”! All of our concerts, gigs, performances and tours are cancelled too. We are all in the same boat!

I knew if I was going to make a video for CGAP I just HAD to play the trombone in it! I Asked Patricia what the kids’ favorite song was and she sent me this:

WOW! What a video! I had never heard this song before, but I was sold! haha So I made a short video from the chorus of the song. Tala is also a very popular dance craze in the Philippines and it was really cute to see all the videos from CGAP of them doing the dance along to this song!

This was a very fun little project to make and I hope it made at least one person happy! Take care everyone. Stay home and stay busy. Keep making music, keep dancing, keep creating. This will pass and we will be back at it soon!

REFLECTION FROM DISNEY'S MULAN: Trombone and Marimba Duet Feat. Kaylie Brooke

If you are a Disney or Mulan fan, then you know that March 27, 2020 was the planned U.S. release date for the new Mulan movie. With everything that is going on in the world, that is sadly no longer happening. Kaylie and I have been planning to release this video on March 27th for a while, and after talking about it, we decided to release it anyway! For those of you who were excited about the Mulan movie coming out, hopefully our rendition of Reflection will hold you over until the actual movie release happens. Please enjoy and share with all of your Disney and Mulan loving friends!

Kaylie and I co-arranged this piece, which is something I have never done before. I arranged the trombone part and Kaylie arranged the marimba part. We did this remotely as I was in Arizona during this time and Kaylie was in Texas. We communicated by iMessage and email and would send each other “pieces” of the project to get feedback from each other. We worked together to create what you are hearing in this video! This was a really fun way to work, and I think it is pretty amazing that you can still make music with someone even though they are in a different part of the country, or even the world!

This was a special song for the both of us to work on because it was also played in an amazing scene in the Blast The Music of Disney show that we have both been a part of since 2016. In the Blast show, Reflection was realized as a flute and fluglehorn duet. The music was captured into motion by the amazing baton soloist Chiho Honjo. It has always been one of my favorite scenes from that show. Kaylie and I were very happy to arrange reflection for trombone and marimba so we could perform very our own version.

Brave Musician Podcast

During my visit in Phoenix, AZ I was invited for an interview on the Brave Musician Podcast. I was super excited and immediately accepted the offer! I have done many radio interviews before and have had a great time, but never a podcast interview. I always love trying things I have never done before.

Brave Musician was created by and is run my Monica Shriver, who is a freelance saxophonist in the Phoenix area (soon to be Nashville). Monica and I were both students at ASU, although we missed each other by a few years. We have also played on various gigs together throughout the years from Hot Birds and the Chili Sauce, to Sharon Owens Barbara Streisand Tribute to community college big bands and probably more that I cannot think of at the moment!

As most of you know, I have been living and working in Japan for the last few years. It has been awesome to watch from a distance and see the progress that Monica has made with the Brave Musician podcast. To prep for my interview, I started listening to some of the previous episodes to see what it was all about. I absolutely loved it! Brave Musician is very unique because during these interviews, they talk about the things that no one else it talking about! One theme across the many episodes that I listened to was they talked about the humanity of what it means to be a musician; beyond the gigs, and accomplishments, and the “how-tos”. Brave Musician interviews all kinds of musicians to hear their unique story. What kind of tough decisions they had to make throughout their careers. And most importantly, what was going on in their head during these times. I WANT IT THAT WAY - BACKSTREET BOYS: Trombone Multitrack Cover

I arranged I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys for five trombones. If you were a kid in the 90’s - you know this song! The boyband craze of the late 90s - early 2000s was inescapable. In fact, I am patiently waiting for this trend to have a comeback. Any good 2020s boybands out there?! Let me know!

In this trombone version of I Want It That Way, Each trombone part represents one of the vocal parts for each Backstreet Boy. Since the Backstreet Boys are a five member, male singing group, the parts work out really well for the register of the trombone. Even though I am a diehard 'NSYNC fan (12-year-old me would kill me for making this BSB video) I cannot deny the catchiness of this song. It’s no wonder why I like it, it was written by the same people who wrote many ' NSYNC songs - Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson.

Also, this song is a HIT at karaoke! Especially when you have a bunch of people who want to sing. There are 5 different solo parts in this song, which is quite rare to find in a pop tune. I have definitely spent a fare amount of time singing this song. That’s why it is so fun to play on trombone!

Lastly, I really want to know, help me settle this eternal dispute: Are you Team Backstreet Boys or Team ‘NSYNC?

REMAINING ARIZONA SHOWS!

My time in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona is coming to an end! The announcement on where I’m heading next is coming soon!

Above are the remaining shows I will be playing at while I am in Arizona. I have been playing with The Hourglass Cats for years and playing with this band is always a part of my Arizona homecoming! I am so happy I got to play as many shows as I did with The Hourglass Cats while I was in town. I also got to spend a few days in the studio recording trombone tracks for their new album. I will definitely keep you all updated when that comes out!

I am especially excited to play the gig at The Ostrich Festival in Chandler because I have never been to that before. I hope I get to see some ostriches!!! The headliner at The Ostrich festival on 3/14 is Blues Traveler. 3/13 is 98 Degrees (damn, missed it by a day, haha)! On 3/6 I will be playing with Rockin’ Chair at the Lost Leaf. This is only my second time playing with this band, but they are awesome! They have a super unique sound. Rockin’ Chair is led by Gene Moran who is an excellent songwriter and lyricist. An oh, he sounds like Bob Dylan, haha! I’m looking forward to playing with them again.

I am also excited to be playing at The Lost Leaf. The Lost Leaf is an amazing bar and live music venue in the historic neighborhood of Roosevelt Row. It is one of my favorite bars in the city and when you watch live music there you truly get a sense of what Phoenix “is”. AND to top it all off, it’s First Friday! First Friday is a huge event that happens, well every first Friday, in downtown Phoenix. The streets are lined with art, the galleries are open, and you can hear live music coming from everywhere. I definitely recommend checking out First Fridays if you’re ever in Phoenix at the beginning of a month!

CAREER PATHWAYS AS A FREELANCE MUSICIAN: Music Student to Music Pro - At Arizona State University

On February 24, 2020 I spoke to the brass studios at Arizona State University. In this presentation, I spoke about my transition from music student to music professional, my career so far, Blast!, Japan, freelancing, networking, social media, and more! I was very happy to get to share my experiences with so many students, in the same room as I used to have classes, no less! A huge thank you to the brass faculty at ASU for having me come speak to your students: Dr. Brad Edwards, Dr. John Ericson, Joe Burgstaller and Dr. Deanna Swoboda.

SLIDESHOW UPDATES: YouTube, Social Media and More. Here's What's Coming Up Next!

I have some news! Things are changing for the SlideShow project. SlideShow is a collaborative trombone project that I have been working on with my husband, Patrick Chappell, the trombones from Blast!, and many more of my trombone friends. I LOVE working on these projects… but the downside is they take a lot of time.

For those of you who follow my YouTube channel and social media, you might have noticed lately, I have been uploading and posting a lot more frequently! I am making a big push to increase my online presence and grow on both YouTube and social media. My new goals are YouTube uploads once a week and social media posts everyday on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. With these new goals, it is absolutely impossible to have all of this content be from SlideShow. Especially since I am doing so many trombone related activities in my own career. So moving forward, the SlideShow social media accounts will be going away and all traffic will be directed to my accounts @lisaliztrombone.

This change will allow me to create more content! Different kinds of content! I want to of course, make SlideShow videos, but also: solo videos, live performance videos, music education videos, and vlogs about my career and being a freelance musician. Basically, just everything I do.

Here are the things you need to know:

1. The SlideShow project is NOT going away. We will continue to make trombone collaboration videos and share them on the YouTube channel LISA LIZ TROMBONE

2. SlideShow now has its very own playlist on the LISA LIZ TROMBONE channel, and all of our videos are there. That playlist is where I will continue to upload new SlideShow videos (coming soon!).

3. The YouTube channel, LISA LIZ TROMBONE, has been reorganized so you can find the content you are looking for faster.

4. I will no longer be making posts on the SlideShow social media accounts (FB, Instagram, Twitter). Posting everything on my accounts @lisaliztrombone, will free up time, so I can spend more time creating content! If you want to keep following SlideShow, please follow me for all future updates, in addition to all of my other musical news and content!

Koi is a super popular pop song in Japan by Gen Hoshino that came out in 2016. I have heard this song covered by every type of artist and musical ensemble that you can imagine! There is also a famous dance that accompanies this song "Koi Dance", which was made popular by the Japanese show, Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu (which translates to Running Away is Shameful but Helpful, but goes by the English title, We Married as a Job).

When this song is performed live in Japan, people start doing the dance - it's crazy! (Which, now that I'm thinking of it... I should have done the dance in the video... missed opportunity, haha!) If you want to check out the original or the dance video, I highly suggest you do. It will put a smile on your face and brighten your day, I promise!

LIVIN' ON A PRAYER BY BON JOVI 500 SUBSCRIBERS SPECIAL: Trombone Collaboration Cover Version

For those of you who are subscribed to my YouTube channel SlideShow, you know that I have been uploading videos a lot more consistently lately. When I got home from tour last September, I decided I was really going to go all in on this YouTube channel and work really hard to make it grow. Since then, it has been my goal to upload once a week. Once I started uploading more frequently, the channel really started to take off!

On January 27, 2020 we hit 500 subscribers! This is halfway to our goal for the year of 1,000 subs. I had been wanting to make a video of Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi for a long time, as it is one of everyone's favorite karaoke songs. Playing up the line "Whoa, we're halfway there" seemed perfect for the 500 Subscribers Special video. I didn’t want to just do a video for this song... I wanted to make it a special one. I have been talking to other people for a while now about how I can include the SlideShow audience more, and create more interactions and engagement with the people watching the videos. It seemed natural to make Livin’ on a Prayer the video to do just that by accepting video submissions from our subscribers. This was really fun and I am so happy so many people participated in the video (we had 11 total)! I got to play with some old friends and made some new ones in the process. The SlideShow channel, and music in general, is all about connecting with people, and this project allowed us to do just that.

The video for Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi is on track to be one of our most successful videos yet. I definitely want to make more collaboration videos like this in the future! I want to thank each and every one of our collaborators for their contribution to the video: Paul Blakely, Kaylie Brooke, Adam Byars, Tao Guthrie, Guillermo Montecelo, Ben Owens, Guillermo Ramirez, Emily Rozanski, Peter Tijerina and Josiah Williams.
